FAIRFIELD — Come Wednesday with the start of 2014, the Solano County Conflict Defender’s Office will change its name to the Alternate Public Defender’s Office.
“The new name does a better job of explaining to the public what our office does,” Chief Deputy Public Defender Roberto Najera said in a press release.
He described the office as an alternative to the Public Defender’s Office. It is used in cases involving multiple indigent defendants or when there is a prior relationship with a party in a case.
“In legal terms this is called a ‘conflict,’ and it is one of the ways we ensure everyone in the legal system gets a proper defense,” Najera said.
However, the Conflict Defender’s Office often received phone calls from people who mistakenly thought it resolved civil conflicts. Some clients thought the office was trying to resolve a conflict in their case.
“We are changing our name to eliminate this unnecessary confusion. With our new name, it is very clear what we do and why we are here,” Najera said.
The office has 20 lawyers and support staff and is located on the third floor of the county Government Center at 675 Texas St.
