BART trains to stop for one minute Thursday

FAIRFIELD — BART will stop its trains at 10:21 a.m. Thursday for one minute as part of  ”The Great California Shakeout” earthquake drill.

The drill is an acknowledgment that the threat of an earthquake is ever-present, a BART news release said. The Hayward fault is a particular concern because the fault is close to much of the train system, it said.

“I’m proud to say BART has been very proactive in preparing for earthquakes,” BART Vice President John McPartland said in the release. “We launched our earthquake safety program in 2005, thanks to overwhelming public support for a bond measure to help fund the work, and we are on time and under budget.”
