Sacramento Valley National Cemetery Memorial Day Program
DIXON — More then 1,200 families and veterans came and held their hands over their hearts as the “The Star Spangled Banner” played on Monday morning at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery’s Memorial Day Program.
“We are here to honor the courage of the American spirit,” Cynthia Nunez, director of the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, told the audience. “To the families visiting, I wish you comfort and peace of mind. To those that came to support, I join you in pride.”
The 59th Army Band, called “The Governor’s Own,” played patriotic selections.
The featured speaker, J.P. Tremblay, deputy secretary, communications and legislation of California Department of Veterans Affairs, spoke about the true meaning of Memorial Day and the importance of showing appreciation for the sacrifices members of the military make.
“There is no other place I would rather be today,” said Monica Houston of Sacramento. “I am here to show my appreciation to the military and for the freedom I enjoy every day.”
Presentation of colors and the retiring of colors were done by the Hogan High School NJROTC Color Guard.
“It’s great to have the youth here and see their dedication to the military,” Nunez told the audience.
Tamara Jones of Fairfield cheered with the crowd in recognition of the active military and the veterans, and spoke about her honor to be a part of the program by volunteering her time.
“We are here to give honor to our veterans and we will have a wreath presentation in honor of all the branches of the military,” Jones said.”My mom is buried here and I am so proud to have her here. She is surrounded by the best military presence and she will always have soldiers by her side.”

It is so tough to get over someone’s death especially if that someone is so dear to you. There are many decisions that must be made and the quality of the chosen cemetery will have a direct impact on the level of assistance you get during an emotional time of life.
Choosing the right cemetery is one of the most important parts of a burial plan. A cemetery should be a quiet place for contemplation and remembrance. Additionally a cemetery’s location should be in a location that was important in the deceased person’s life and near his or her family. There should be no compromise on any of the things which are involved in these proceedings.
