RIO VISTA — Sheepdogs and their handlers will vie for top honors at the McCormack Ranch Sheep Dog Trials this weekend.

The competition runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday and includes three one-day open trials followed by nursery trials for young dogs. The event – sanctioned by the U.S. Border Collie Handler’s Association – features an “open full national-style course” with a 500-yard outrun. Great Britain’s Michael Gallagher will be the judge.

There is a fee for visitors, but children under 5 are free. Attendees may bring outside food as well as blankets and low-seating chairs, but pets are not allowed. A chuck wagon with food and beverages for purchase will be on site Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets may be purchased at Brand You Consignment, 116 Main St., and Books RioV, 187 Main St., in Rio Vista or online at http://sheepdogtrials.brownpapertickets.com.

McCormack Ranch is located at 8192 Montezuma Hills Road, Rio Vista.
