Latest Delta ferry repairs complete

By From page A3 | February 28, 2014

RIO VISTA — The Real McCoy II ferry returned to service at 11:30 a.m. Thursday after its latest round of emergency repairs.

Crews repaired the ferry’s hydraulic system. The ferry then passed U.S. Coast Guard inspection, a state Department of Transportation press release said.

The ferry takes Highway 84 traffic across Cache Slough in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Without it, Rio Vista traffic headed to Ryer Island must travel 15 miles to the J-Mack ferry, instead of 2 miles to the Real McCoy II.

The Real McCoy II ferry previously returned to service Feb. 16 after being out for a month for emergency repairs to the propulsion system. But it went down again Feb. 21 for the latest round of repairs.

This "ferry" is the poster child for waste and stupidity. It has constantly been in the news...unending "emergency repairs". The original 65 year old ferry that this junker replaced ran and ran and ran on its old Detroit diesels...and probably is STILL running somewhere...but WHERE?

I'd like to see the operational budget for this ferry... how does it compare to buidlign a bridge, and how many vehicles does it carry a year? Is there a toll?
