FAIRFIELD — The effort to bring the Spanish-American War-era armored cruiser USS Olympia to Mare Island in Vallejo as a floating museum continues to move slowly forward.
The Mare Island Historic Park Foundation announced it submitted the second part of the application to move the Olympia from its present berth in Philadelphia to Dry Dock No. 1 at Mare Island.
Supporters who started fundraising efforts to pay for the cruiser’s extensive renovation and move have thus far seen disappointing results, according to a release from the foundation.
The foundation has been working to acquire the Olympia since August 2011. The Olympia was Adm. George Dewey’s flagship during the Battle of Manila Bay when the U.S. fleet shattered the Spanish fleet moored there and set the foundation for taking over the Philippines.
