Library group picks ‘The Higher Power of Lucky’ for Solano Kids Read
FAIRFIELD — Newberry Award winner Susan Patron’s book, “The Higher Power of Lucky,” is the selection for this year’s Solano Kids Read.
Solano Kids Read is an annual program sponsored by the Solano County Library Foundation and brings celebrated authors to Solano County to meet with children and share the joy of reading.
The book won the highest honor in children’s literature in 2007.
“This book touches on issues, that, unfortunately, are relevant in the lives of many children today,” said Juli Huston, in a press release. She is one of the librarians organizing this year’s event. “We think the book will resonate with our young readers, their families and classmates.”
The story revolves around a 10-year-old girl who lives in a very small California desert town. Her mother is dead, her father is absent and she’s afraid her guardian is leaving.
The books is available at Solano County Library locations and can be reserved online at www.solanolibrary.com.
Patron will visit local schools and libraries March 19-21. Her schedule is:
- March 19: School events only in Suisun City and Rio Vista.
- 9:30 a.m. March 20: Ulatis Community Center, 1010 Ulatis Drive, Vacaville.
- 3:30 p.m. March 20: Fairfield Civic Library, 1150 Kentucky St. Book signing included.
- 9:15 a.m. March 21: Springstowne Library, 1003 Oakwood Ave., Vallejo
- 11 a.m. March 21: John F. Kennedy Library, 505 Santa Clara St., Vallejo.
- 4 p.m. March 21: Vacaville Public Library, 1 Town Square. Book signing included.
