Support Our Cancer Kids holds holiday party in Fairfield
FAIRFIELD — Sunday’s Christmas party at the Moose Lodge is just the kind of event families of Support Our Cancer Kids need, according to Tim Garrido.
Garrido, the group president and a Vacaville police officer, is the father of a 6-year-old son, Josh, who is diagnosed with leukemia. Garrido said the other parents in the group understand what his family is going through, which is encouraging.
“You tend to feel like you’re by yourself even though you know that’s not true,” Garrido said.
The Solano County-based group formed this year after breaking away from the Sonoma Children’s Cancer Community. About 16 families came to the Moose Lodge on Sunday to eat a home-cooked meal, watch a performance from Vacaville’s Crosson Brothers and open gifts from Santa Claus.
Madison Lloyd, 6, let out a shriek when opening her gift, a Barbie doll. When she showed it to her sister, Suraya Lloyd, 8, Suraya ripped open her gift, too, a jewelry boutique.
“This is what I told you I wanted,” Suraya said to her mother, Monica Lloyd.
Monica Lloyd said Madison has cerebral palsy and the family decided to join SOCK because there were no local cerebral palsy groups. Lloyd said it has been a good way for her daughters to meet friends.
Two people were honored Sunday. Former executive director Marty Close was given the Volunteer of the Year award. Lauren Hyman, the outgoing therapist, was given a plate with the thumbprints of each of the program’s children.
“It’s very hard to leave this group,” Hyman said. “You’re the best.”
