Prom Closet to open doors April 5

By From page A4 | February 20, 2014

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Youth Commission is inviting local students to visit this year’s prom closet.

The Prom Closet is an annual event hosted by the Youth Commission, with support from Old Navy, to reuse prom dresses and accessories. More than 150 dresses have already been collected and will be given away at the event.

Students may select a dress to take home at no charge. Shoes and other accessories may also be available.

Local makeup and hair professionals will be on hand to offer workshops on hair and makeup tips to help students be ready for prom season.

The Prom Closet will be on open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5 at the Fairfield Community Center, 1000 Kentucky St. in Fairfield.

The Youth Commission is collecting gently used prom dresses, special occasion jewelry, purses and wraps as well as formal shoes for both boys and girls. Prom clothing suitable for boys is also being collected.

Donations will be accepted until April 2 and can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Sullivan Interagency Youth Services Center, or from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Fairfield Police Activities League Center. Both are located at 2195 Union Ave. in Fairfield.

Love the idea. I was just talking about this a few weeks ago on Facebook.

Our Youth Commission rocks. And we have a line of young people who want to join. I'm honored to interview them and meet them. Great ideas and actions.
