FAIRFIELD — Black smoke hung over Travis Boulevard after a two-alarm structure fire Saturday damaged an apartment on Rayburn Court.
Fairfield Fire Capt. Bobby Silva said a fire at a fourplex apartment unit was reported about 4:47 p.m. Silva said the residents believed the fire started in the kitchen somewhere around the refrigerator, then quickly spread through the apartment.
All the residents were safely evacuated and nobody was hurt.
Four engines and one battalion chief put the fire out in about 20 minutes. Silva said a water line that broke helped keep the fire in check. Nearby apartments were not damaged.
Fire crews remained on the scene to help remove the insulation from the attic. Silva said because it was a blown-in insulation, the materials inside could have caused another fire if it was not properly removed.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
