FAIRFIELD — Fairfield firefighters have not yet determined what caused the Friday night fire that gutted the Pepperbelly’s Comedy Club, Battalion Chief Bob Stoffel said Monday afternoon.

The sidewalk around the popular night spot remains cordoned off as firefighters began checking out the building. The fire burned through the roof and heavily damaged the interior and some of the building’s exterior.

Thick reinforced concrete walls kept the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.

More than 20 fire engines from Solano County were called in to fight the five-alarm fire that was reported at 6:45 p.m. Friday.
