FAIRFIELD — Mended Hearts started in 1951, with Dr. Dwight Emory Harken and his open-heart patients in Massachusetts. Today, according to its website, there are more than 300 chapters.
In addition to support groups, it offers online, hospital and phone visiting. Tim Woodson, who is starting the local chapter, trained to become a hospital volunteer.
Mended Hearts International also offers a program for children who are dealing with heart issues, and their parents. It began in 2004 with groups in Fresno and Hollywood, Fla.
Solano County was home to a Mended Hearts support group at one time. It folded.
The group will be hosted by NorthBay Medical Center. For more information, call Woodson at 925-408-3642 or email him at email@example.com.
