ROCKVILLE — The fight against heart disease and strokes gets moving Saturday with the return of the American Heart Association’s and American Stroke Association’s 5-kilometer Heart Walk in Fairfield.
The 2013 Napa/Solano Heart Walk takes place at Solano Community College, 4000 Suisun Valley Road. Festivities begin at 9 a.m. The walk starts at 10:30 a.m.
Organizers hope to raises $100,000 to support research for cardiovascular disease and stroke, as well as related educational programs. Marilyn Manfredi of Medic Ambulance said organizers are working diligently to build on last year’s inaugural Heart Walk in Solano County.
The walk is structured in similar fashion to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life events, but with a restriction on distance rather than time. Companies, community groups, and families and friends form teams to collect donations to support the Heart Walk campaign.
Survivors of heart disease and stroke are encouraged to take part. Those who do so will serve as “Red Cap” ambassadors for the event. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
