Firefighters quickly extinguish garbage fire

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Fire Department had some trouble reaching a small garbage fire near the Meyer Corp. building on Beck Avenue, Friday night.

Battalion Chief Matt Luckenbach said it took two crews about 20 minutes to reach the flames, which were reported as a grass fire around 7:21 p.m.

It took time to figure out what road to take and on what side of the creek and railroad tracks the fire was, Luckenbach said.

When firefighters reached the fire it turned out to be fueled by garbage, likely from homeless encampments.

Once on scene, Luckenbach said his crews had the fire extinguished within 5 minutes.

Crews cleared the scene about 8 p.m.
