FAIRFIELD — A 58-year-old Fairfield bicyclist was hospitalized early Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a car while crossing Beck Avenue, according to Fairfield police.

He and another cyclist were crossing Beck Avenue to Boynton Avenue just before 1:43 p.m. They had just come out of a driveway on the east side of Beck Avenue just north of West Texas Street when they rode in front of a northbound Toyota Camry driven by a 21-year-olde Fairfield woman.

The woman tried unsuccessfully to stop and struck the cyclist, who was knocked up onto the hood of her car, breaking the windshield on the driver’s side before rolling off onto the street. Police said he had head injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Thats a dangerous area. People dart out from the trail when cars are picking up speed for the freeway.

There is a lot going on for that short stretch of road. That is a 35mph zone with an ending lane and freeway entrance. There are two crosswalks and although probably inconvenient, the best and safest places to cross there. You can't be too careful. Hope the bicyclist is okay.

Yesterday alone, I darn near hit two cyclist on N. Texas in two separate locations a block apart, one in front of Food Maxx. Traffic was moving along at 30 mph, and these two are just weaving through traffic to get across the street. In that very same area a man decides to ride his bike off the sidewalk into oncoming traffic, on my right....taking up a lot of space causing me to swerve. Were any of them wearing helmets? Idiots are everywhere in Fairfield! Bet the tax payers will be picking up the tab for the Beck St. accident. Hope the fellow will be okay, but honestly.....I feel more sorry for that driver. I know if I hit someone I'd have a nervous breakdown!
