FAIRFIELD — Kevin Carella on Thursday went from being a Fairfield police sergeant to lieutenant.

The brief ceremony took place at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council chamber. Police Chief Walt Tibbet had Carella raise his right hand and take an oath for his new position. He will be assigned to the patrol unit. The promotion is effective Friday.

“This is not just about you, but the future of this city and the Police Department,” Tibbet told him before a crowd of city officials, several Fairfield-Suisun School District board members and well-wishers.

Carella came to the Police Department as a cadet in 1985. He attended police academy in 1995 and joined the department as an officer. He was the department’s police officer of the year in 2003 and was the police manager of the year in 2012.

His assignments over the years have ranged from patrol to investigations to youth services to the canine unit. He serves as a Fairfield Police Activities League board member and volunteers at the Matt Garcia center.

Congrats carella! Youve earned that six figure pay. Now, you would think that with higher pay comes higher output and a harder worker for the taxpayers cutting the checks but im afraid its the other way around.

There isn't a more deserving officer to be promoted. Lieutenant Carella is a tremendous asset to both the police department and the school district. I work in the same industry, but at another agency. I have been aware of Kevin's career for a long time and have been in awe of his dedication to the youth of the community, especially on his own time. 2real couldn't be more wrong. Congrats Kevin!
