FAIRFIELD — Multiple grass fires along westbound Interstate 80 near Red Top Road caused heavy traffic congestion Wednesday afternoon.
The roadside fires were reported at about 4:40 p.m. on westbound I-80, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Battalion Chief Barry Biermann. Fire engines from Fairfield Fire, Vallejo Fire, Cordelia Fire Protection District and CalFire contained the fires at about 5:23 p.m. The fires scorched one to two acres.
The fires shut down the right land of westbound I-80 during the evening commute.
Fairfield Fire reports that the four-alarm grass fire was actually at least five fires that burned close together and may have been caused by a malfunctioning vehicle. The large fire was called unusual for this time of year.
The I-80 fires were reported minutes after another grass fire was reported on Highway 12 at Chadbourne Road.
