It’s been almost 40 years since Sissy Spacek unleashed her telekinetic powers on her small town after being pushed too far at her high school prom.
Chloe Grace Moretz brings “Carrie” back to life Friday in a re-imagining of the 1976 horror movie. Julianne Moore stars as her deeply religious mother. The film is rated R.
Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger pair up again in “Escape Plan.” Stallone’s character is the world’s foremost authority on structural integrity. He takes one last job, breaking out of the secret, high-tech facility called “The Tomb.” Jim Caviezel of TV’s “Person of Interest” also stars in the R movie.
Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Julian Assange in “The Fifth Estate.” The movie traces the early days of WikiLeaks and culminates in the release of history-making information leaks. It’s rated R.
Opening in limited release Wednesday is:
“Kill Your Darlings,” rated R, which features Daniel Radcliffe as a young Allen Ginsberg, Jack Huston as Jack Kerouac and Ben Foster as William Burroughs. It’s set at Columbia University in 1944.
“Twelve Years a Slave,” which centers on a free black man sold into slavery. In the 12th year of his ordeal, he has a chance meeting with an abolitionist. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars with Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti and Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s rated R.
“All is Lost,” rated, PG-13, which stars Robert Redford in the drama about a man whose 39-foot yacht takes on water after a collision with shipping container left floating on the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, he finds himself looking mortality in the face.
“American Promise,” not rated, a documentary that follows a young man and his best friend through the U.S. educational system.
“Big (expletive) Spider!” It tells the tale of a military experiment gone awry, leaving a giant spider rampaging through Los Angeles. It’s not rated.
“Haunter,” which features Abigail Breslin as the only member of a family to realize that all of them are reliving the same events, from a foggy day in 1986. It’s not rated.
“I’m in Love With a Church Girl,” rated PG, which features Ja Rule as a bad boy who is trying to reform himself yet keeps connections with his criminal past. Then he meets that special girl and is faced with choosing the life he knows and the love that he feels. Adrienne Bailon also stars.
“Torn,” not rated, the story of two women who form an unexpected bond after their sons are killed in explosion at the local shopping mall.
“Seasons of Gray,” rated PG-13, which focuses on a man who goes to prison for a crime he did not commit. He finds redemption, but his brothers, who hate him, hold his salvation in their hands.
