FAIRFIELD — Hobbits and habits hit movie screens Friday.
The much-anticipated “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” finds Bilbo Baggins and his companions traveling east and encountering more dangers. En route they meet the skin-changer Beorn and the giant spiders of Mirkwood.
Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch and Evangeline Lilly star in the sci-fi flick, rated PG-13.
It’s also being shown in 3D.
Tyler Perry, playing Madea, finds old habits are hard to break in “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas.” Kathy Najimy also stars in the PG-13 comedy.
Opening in limited release are:
“American Hustle,” a drama about a con man and his equally cunning British partner. Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence star. It’s rated R.
“Saving Mr. Banks,” which features an all-star lineup in the tale of how Walt Disney came to make “Mary Poppins.” Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks star in the PG-13 flick.
“Hours,” which features the late Paul Walker as the father of a premature baby born during Hurricane Katrina. It’s rated PG-13.
“Here Comes the Devil,” a horror movie featuring a brother and sister who undergo some major changes after spending a night lost on a desolate, cave-riddled mountainside. It’s rated R.
“Nuclear Nation,” a documentary about the lives of Japanese refugees displaced after the 2011 tsunami and nuclear meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi. It’s not rated.
“Cinema Paradiso,” a drama that centers on a filmmaker who recalls his childhood, when he fell in love with the movies at his village’s theater and formed a deep friendship with the theater’s projectionists. It’s rated PG.
