FAIRFIELD — The theme of NorthBay Healthcare’s fourth annual Girls Night Out is “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby.”
After the Oct. 4 fundraiser with Marsha Starr, the HypnoDIVA, it may be, “you’ve come an even longer way, baby.” Starr states on her website she is one of “an infinitesimally small number of female professional comedy hypnotists in the world.”
“This is a field that is primarily appealing to males for some reason,” Starr said in an email to the newspaper. “Most females in the field of hypnosis go into the therapeutic arena.”
Starr honed her skills in Las Vegas and takes her show across the country, doing more than 120 shows a year.
Those attending her show next weekend can expect an action-packed, fast-paced, laugh-until-your-face-hurts spectacle, she said. And the memory of it will live for months after, Starr wrote.
“Comedy hypnosis is the only form of entertainment where the audience members are the stars of the show,” she said. “It’s a laugh-a-minute roller coaster ride of unleashed hilarity as inhibitions get tossed out the window while the hypnotized volunteers romp through a whirlwind of riotous antics.”
Those brave volunteers will enjoy themselves but not be made to do something they don’t want to do nor reveal deep, dark secrets, Starr said. Another misconception about hypnosis is that one will get stuck there.
“None of that is true, since the performer is not asleep, in a coma or in any other way rendered at the mercy of the hypnotist,” Starr wrote. “They have complete control of themselves at all times.”
Hypnosis is likened to being “awake in a dream,” according to Starr’s website.
Starr also maintains a hypnotherapy practice. The main reason people seek her help is for weight issues, she said.
Proceeds benefit the Center for Women’s Health, an affiliate of NorthBay Healthcare. The event will include boutique vendors, skin and makeup consultations and massages.
Those attending are encouraged to wear 1920s speakeasy attire.
