Solano Repertory Theatre Company is turning it into a family tradition for the cast and crew, as well as the audience.
Dan Clanton, who plays the lead role of Scrooge, is joined by his wife, Paula Clanton. She handles stage manager duties as well as props. His 88-year-old mother, Jackie McEvilly, is in the ensemble.
Brothers Nathaniel, Nickolas and Logan Custer have returned to play Tiny Tim and two other Cratchit sons. Their Cratchit siblings, Belinda and Betty, are played by sisters Sophia and Irie Newcomer.
This year’s production has relocated from the Harbor Theatre in Suisun City to the smaller Missouri Street Theatre, which has forced a reconfiguration on stage.
“It’s small,” director Carla Spindt said of the facility. “I like the way the sets turned out. We have figured out the challenges and created the streets of London.”
While the venue is new, Dan Clanton as Scrooge isn’t. He is reprising his role as the holiday “bah humbugger.”
“It’s always fun to play the bad guy,” he said. “The best part is the transformation (of the character).”
Much like the change Clanton undergoes physically to become Scrooge. Once the makeup is on, Clanton said he can make the switch. He’s also adapted a crouching “Scrooge” walk.
His favorite portrayal of the curmudgeon was done by actor George C. Scott.
“He carried the part well,” Clanton said. “And, he had beautiful mutton chops I can’t grow.”
The show clocks in at just about an hour so families can enjoy the tale without worrying about youngsters losing interest.
Another returning cast member is singer/actor Bobby Ellison. He returns to the cast playing the ghost of Christmas present.
“I love the story,” he said. “I love the idea of how someone can change.”
The costumes, said Ellison, make him feel like he’s “walked into Dickens’ world again.”
This may be his last show in Solano County for a little while. Ellison recently relocated to Santa Rosa where he’s working on his first CD as well as connecting with live theater groups in that area.
