Vacaville school board to accept applications for vacant seat

VACAVILLE — The Vacaville School District board of education agreed Thursday to receive applications for the position vacated last week upon the resignation of Trustee Jerry Eaton.

By law, the board has the choice of holding a special election or making a provisional appointment.

For the sake of “consistency,” Trustee Michael Kitzes said the board ought to follow the same procedure as was done when Larry Mazzuca left the board last August. The board collected 15 applications at the time – of which the board re-interviewed the remaining two of the top three candidates when Theresa Nutt resigned a month later. Both left because they moved out of the district.

It was also decided that those applications collected at the time of Mazzuca’s and Nutt’s departure will also be considered if the applicants are still interested in the position.

The law also dictates that the position must be filled within 60 days of the resignation letter. That gives the board until around Sept. 8.

Board conversation indicated that the appointment could be finalized at the Sept. 4 meeting.
