VACAVILLE — The Vacaville school board appointed longtime educator Michele Dally to join the board Thursday after much internal debate by each sitting trustee, filling the seat vacated by Theresa Nutt when she moved to Suisun City.
The board conducted public interviews of Dally and Vacaville police veteran Shawn Windham during its regular meeting.
Each board member asked one question of each candidate – both candidates faced the same questions – and the candidates were asked to give a closing statement.
Windham went first as the result of a coin flip and relied on his experience as a police officer and the different perspective he could bring to the board.
“It’s a unique perspective that can be a benefit to the board,” Windham said in his closing statement. “I bring a set of lenses that the average person may not see through.”
Dally called on her 34 years as an educator – teacher, administrator, after-school coordinator and now as a liaison for student teachers at the University of California, Davis – to prepare her for the role the board serves.
“I feel I can be a conduit for the public,” Dally said. “People know who I am. I’m still in the schools and on the campuses. I’m approachable.”
The decision wasn’t easy, as each board member noted when giving his or her vote.
Board president David McCallum and Trustees Michael Kitzes, Whit Whitman and Chris Flask all voted for Dally. Sherie Mahlberg and Jerry Eaton chose Windham.
The board then made a unanimous 6-0 roll call vote to appoint Dally to the vacant seat. She was sworn in by Solano County Superintendent of Schools Jay Speck.
Dally then took her seat on the dais for the remainder of the meeting.
