VACAVILLE — Barely a week after it appointed Christopher Flask to replace Larry Mazzuca, the Vacaville school board determined the process Thursday for replacing Theresa Nutt, who handed in her resignation Monday.
Both Mazzuca and Nutt resigned because they moved out of the district’s boundaries.
The board again had to decide whether to make a provisional appointment to fill Nutt’s seat until the next school board election, which is November 2014 – also when Nutt’s term is up – or to have a special election.
“And here we are again,” said David McCallum, board president, as he kicked off the discussion during the board’s regular meeting.
A special election could cost up to $600,000, according to numbers the board attributed to District Chief Business Officer and Associate Superintendent Kari Sousa.
“We just went through a lengthy process and we narrowed it down to three candidates,” said board member Jerry Eaton. “It was very close. They were evenly qualified. It would seem not expedient to go through the whole process again.”
After some discussion, board members agreed unanimously to make an appointment after noting that there was no way they could have known they’d have to replace two members in quick succession.
The board members were, however, split on how many candidates to bring back from the recent round of interviews.
A 5-1 voice vote determined that the current six board members will re-interview the other two top vote getters from last week’s meeting, during which Flask appointed.
Board member Whit Whitman was the lone “nay” vote. He said he wanted to bring in a wider scope of the previous group of candidates.
McCallum, sympathizing with Whitman, noted that some board members might have voted differently if they knew they would have to select two people so quickly.
“I would suggest it might be appropriate to bring back all 14 of the previous candidates,” he said.
Board member Sherie Mahlberg moved that the board limit it to two candidates, which Eaton seconded with the amendment that the board, including new member Flask, be able to ask questions of the candidates.
After the vote, the board instructed staff to contact Michele Dally and Shawn Windham to see if they can make it to the board’s Oct. 3 regular meeting for interviews and final selection.
Earlier in the meeting, Eaton was voted unanimously to succeed Mazzuca as the board vice president until Dec. 12, when officers for the new year will be selected.
