VACAVILLE — A week after appointing Christopher Flask to fill a vacancy, the Vacaville School District’s governing board will begin the process anew Thursday.
The board’s regular meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Educational Services Center.
Earlier this week, the board accepted the resignation of board member Theresa Nutt, who is moving out of the district’s boundaries.
Nutt is the second board member to resign in recent months. Larry Mazzuca, who was the board’s vice president, stepped down in August upon moving to Nevada City.
A move to Suisun City caused Nutt to step down effective Oct. 1. Now it’s up to the rest of the school board to determine how to proceed.
The board has two choices: conduct a special election to determine how to fill out Nutt’s term, which expires Dec. 1, 2014, or appoint someone to serve out the remaining year.
Board President David McCallum said a special election could cost up to $600,000.
On the agenda for the board’s regular meeting Thursday is the beginning of that process.
With a pool of applicants already interviewed last week for Mazzuca’s vacant board seat, it’s possible the board could opt to select another person from that group, or to take new applications.
According to state law, the board has 60 days from the receipt of Nutt’s resignation to complete the process.
Also on the agenda is a board election of a vice president, the final step in replacing Mazzuca on the board.
The person elected will be vice president for the remainder of Mazzuca’s term, which expires in 2016.
