FAIRFIELD — Travis School District trustees should appoint a person to fill the vacant board seat left by the resignation of Dawn Kirby, who stepped down May 20 because of a military move that sent her husband John Kirby to Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
The appointment is recommended by the school district staff in a timeline that includes a July 25 deadline for applicants and an Aug. 5 interview of candidates at a public meeting, where Kirby’s successor would be named.
It’s estimated that holding an election, rather than appointing Kirby’s successor, would cost $40,000.
A November 2016 election would take place to complete the remaining two years of the term.
Kirby was appointed to the school board in October 2011 and faced no opposition in November 2013.
She called her years on the school board “the education of a lifetime.”
Travis School District trustees meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Travis Education Center, 2775 De Ronde Drive in Fairfield.
Trustees will also take up a $9,000 contract with the the University of California, Davis for three teacher workshops to put in place the “Being a Writer” student program.
