Solano College to host 9th annual peace jamboree

FAIRFIELD — The local community college’s Umoja Program and Ethnic Studies Program, in coordination with Kaiser Permanente, will host the ninth annual, three-day Peace Summit, “Stop the Violence,” later this month.

The event will take place at various locations on the Fairfield and Vallejo campuses.

The keynote speaker is Lecia Brooks, who leads the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., and is the director of the Civil Rights Memorial Center. Her nationwide presentations are designed to promote tolerance and diversity.

The schedule follows:

April 22

  • 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., Building 1400, Fairfield campus, “The Impact of Violence” panel discussion.
  • 11 to 11:45 a.m., Building 1400, Fairfield campus, “Peace Vigil” personal stories.
  • Noon to 1 p.m., clock tower, Fairfield campus, peace walk, a walk to end violence.
  • 1 to 2:15 p.m., Building 1400, Fairfield campus, speaker and writer Sheri Labedias.
  • 2:30 to 3:15 p.m., Building 1400, Fairfield campus, wrap up and “call to action.”
  • 6 p.m., Room 217, Vallejo campus, video presentation and discussion, “Bullied.”

April 23

  • 5 to 6 p.m., Room 121, Vallejo campus, networking reception.
  • 6 p.m., Room 121, Vallejo campus, keynote speaker Lecia Brooks.

April 24

  • 1 p.m., Building 1400, Fairfield campus, speaker Ramona Bishop, superintendent Vallejo School District; Lecia Brooks and “Peace Vigil.”
