FAIRFIELD — About 30 girls from K.I. Jones Elementary School took part Monday in a practice 5k run/walk as part of the Girls on the Run after-school program.
The afternoon practice run was preparation for the group’s annual 5k run at Napa Valley College on Nov. 16, which is a fundraiser for the Napa and Solano County chapters of the program.
Participants in the after-school program meet twice a week for 10 weeks with half the time dedicated to running and half focused on teaching life skills and building confidence, according to April Massett, a parent volunteer who helps run the K.I. Jones chapter. Girls in the third through fifth grade are able to participate in the program, with sixth-graders taking part in a related group called Girls on Track.
“It’s exciting and I like that we get to do multiple laps around the school. I love to run,” said third-grader Sarah Davis, 8, who finished second in the practice run.
The Nov. 16 5k is open to the entire community, with registration fees supporting the Girls on the Run program, according to Massett. More information on the run can be found at www.gotrnapavalley.org.
