VACAVILLE — Solano Community College is bringing back an administrative position lost to budget cuts and redesignating two existing positions.
All were approved unanimously Wednesday by the college’s governing board.
The move to restore a second position in the president’s office was defended heavily by board members after a critical comment by audience member George Guynn.
It’s an executive assistant position under the direction of the executive coordinator, Judy Spencer. Guynn questioned the need to bring back the position after it had been displaced for the past three years – cut due to budget constraints – and suggested that perhaps there could be a better place to spend the money.
“This particular position, we’re in dire need,” said Sarah Chapman, the governing board president. “Judy Spencer has been carrying the load for the entire college. She works until 9 or 10 p.m. at night and even on weekends. We need help.”
Jowel Laguerre, the college’s president/superintendent, said the missing position has taken a toll in the office. He said tough times dictated the cut, not the fact that the position wasn’t needed.
“Leaving it to one person . . . long hours, weekends . . . is just not a good way to treat our employees,” Laguerre said.
Pay for the position is between $48,163.49 and $60,790.86 a year.
The board also unanimously approved Laguerre’s contract in addition to creating two new job descriptions: dean of students – financial aid, EOPS and veterans; and dean of students – admissions, assessment and scheduling.
Laguerre will earn $237,350 for 223 workdays a year, professional and vehicle allowances and a stipend for a doctorate degree. The pay for the two dean positions is between $88,250.56 and $111,626.94 a year.
