FAIRFIELD — A 9-year-old from B. Gale Wilson Elementary School in Fairfield is a finalist in a Kid Recipe Contest featuring the sweet potato.
Madeline Silva-Sciortino will showcase her recipe Tuesday at the Ten22 Restaurant in Sacramento. A 10-year-old and an 11-year-old are also finalists. Winners will be announced at the event.
The event of the California Food Literacy Center will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the restaurant at 1022 2nd St., Sacramento. There is a ticket fee. The menu for the evening includes roasted fall squash bruschetta, house cured salmon lox with crème fraiche, fall beet tapenade and local goat cheese and wild mushroom pot pies.
The food center was established in 2011 to help children improve their knowledge, attitude and behavior toward food through community food education, the center said. Children learn fruit and vegetable appreciation, how to read nutrition labels, basic cooking skills and environmental impacts of their food choices, the center said.
