VACAVILLE — A man was hospitalized for a gunshot wound after a botched drug deal near Meadowlands Park in the early morning hours, according to police.
Officers responding to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon early Friday found a man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso, according to a press release from Vacaville police.
Dispatch received a call about 1:22 a.m. from a man saying he had been shot by a friend. As officers responded to the victim’s home, police said the victim changed his story by indicating he was shot by an unknown man during a drug deal.
He also changed the location, according to police. The victim said the incident occurred on the footbridge connecting Meadowlands Park to Fairview/Scottsdale Drive near Callison Elementary School after initially saying the incident happened near his home.
The victim told police he had arranged to meet a man he had never met before for a drug deal on the footbridge. The victim said he took the drugs and fled without paying for the contraband, according to police. The victim said he heard two to three gunshots and knew he had been hit by at least one round, police said. The victim then ran through Meadowlands Park to his home.
Officers searched the bridge and found evidence of one round hitting a metal piece of the bridge with an expended bullet nearby, according to police.
The victim was transported to the hospital for a gunshot wound that hospital officials indicated was not life-threatening, police said.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his early 20s with a slight build.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Mark Ferreira at 449-5200.
