FAIRFIELD — A jury trial started Wednesday for a woman who faces a felony gross vehicular manslaughter charge for the deaths of two men in a horrific crash on westbound Interstate 80 near the Air Base Parkway offramp on the morning of Jan. 29, 2012.
The defense attorney for Michele J. Henry conceded his client was speeding at more than 100 mph in her Buick Lucerne before it smashed into the back of a Ford Explorer traveling in the slow lane.
Henry, 44, of Sacramento, was on her way to her job as a store clerk in Pleasant Hill. She left Sacramento shortly before 5 a.m. and was speeding the entire time leading up to the fatal crash, the attorney said.
The prosecutor told jurors that Henry was impaired by Vicodin and marijuana at the time of the crash.
Vicente Santos, 25, died instantly in the crash. He was in the back seat of the Explorer that ended up on its roof in the middle of the freeway after the crash. One of his friends, Anthony Andrade, 33, died a short time later when, as he tried to get Santos out of the wreckage, he was struck by another car that crashed into the wrecked Explorer.
The trial is expected to resume Thursday morning.
