FAIRFIELD — A sexual assault suspect who fled the U.S. to England – and planned to travel to India – was detained at the Heathrow Airport in London and routed back to Chicago where Vallejo Police Department detectives took custody of him, police said Monday.
An ongoing investigation into a series of sexual assaults over four years, all involving a 29-year-old developmentally delayed female victim, led the Vallejo Police Department to obtain an arrest warrant for Surinder Dehal, 58, of Vallejo, police said.
Dehal fled, according to the police, after learning that police were investigating his alleged involvement in the case.
Based upon an arrest warrant obtained by Vallejo detectives, and with the assistance of the U.S. Customs Service, Homeland Security and London authorities, Dehal was detained upon arrival at Heathrow, and his entry was denied.
Detectives from the Vallejo Police Department traveled to Chicago and took custody of Dehal, who was extradited back to Solano County where he is currently in custody. He is awaiting his next court appearance with his bail set at $250,000.
Anyone with any information about the case is asked to call Detective Drew Ramsay or Cpl. John Garcia at 648-4524.
