VACAVILLE — Vacaville police spent more than two hours Friday looking for a suspected auto thief in a residential neighborhood at Sundance Drive and Sungate Court, but didn’t find him.
The incident started when police stopped a car near Brown Street and Browns Valley Road for what Sgt. Chris Polen called “suspicious activity.” Four people were inside. A passenger ran, he said.
Police recognized the man as someone possibly involved in an auto theft, though not of the car he had been riding in. They chased him and he started hopping backyard fences in the Sungate Court neighborhood. Police established a perimeter around a couple of blocks.
Then police searched the backyards with a police dog in the neighborhood of stucco homes with Spanish tile roofs. When they approached a home, they advised residents to stay inside. A few residents waited to return home at the points where police cars blocked the entry roads.
The search began at about 11:30 a.m. and ended about 1:30 p.m. Polen said police will seek a warrant to arrest the suspect.
Police let the other three car occupants involved in the incident leave after citing the driver for driving with a suspended license, Polen said.
