FAIRFIELD — Police arrested a man Monday who ran into the backyard of a central Fairfield house after seeing officers.

The man was riding his bike at about 8:30 a.m. near West Kentucky and Johnson streets when officers drove along on patrol, Fairfield Police Sgt. Sam Rowland said. The man jumped off his bike, ducked behind cars and ran into a backyard along Buchanan Street.

Several small children in a house on the 900 block of Buchanan Street ran outside after seeing a man in their backyard.

“They were terrified,” Rowland said. “They didn’t know who he was.”

Six police cars came to Buchanan Street. Police set up a perimeter and searched the area with a canine. They found a man hiding inside a backyard shed at the house where the children lived.

Police without incident arrested Gregory Richardson, 34, a transient from Fairfield, Rowland said.

The booking log for the Solano County Sheriff’s Office shows Richardson got arrested on suspicion of having controlled substance paraphernalia, possessing a controlled substance, obstructing a police officer, vandalism, trespassing and loitering on private property. Bail for all of the allegations totals $31,200.
