FAIRFIELD — A Vallejo gang member who shot and killed an innocent bystander who was sipping a beer at a Vallejo tavern in January 2007 was sentenced Monday to 50 years to life in prison.
Joseph Verducci was trying to kill a fellow gang member with whom he had a falling out. Verducci missed his intended target and instead, bar patron Jose Corona was shot once in the head as he sat on a bar stool at the front window of My Office bar.
Verducci’s sentencing came after four jury trials – the first three trials deadlocked.
In 2011, Verducci and his defense attorney, John Coffer, went through two jury trials. One jury deadlocked 11-1 for guilt. Another jury deadlocked 8-4 for guilt. In 2012, a third jury deadlocked 9-3 for a not guilty verdict.
A jury in May handed down a guilty verdict.
