Jury convicts in child sexual assault retrial

FAIRFIELD — A jury found a Fairfield man guilty Friday of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl at his Fairfield apartment in 2012.

Humberto C. Dias, who has been in jail since his arrest in July 2012, is scheduled to be sentenced July 21.

Dias faces a 15-years-to-life prison sentence, according to prosecutor Barry Taira.

The conviction was no easy feat for Taira. A previous jury trial for Dias in November 2013 ended deadlocked 8-4 for a not guilty verdict for the former upholsterer.

Dias’ defense attorney in both trials accused Taira of conducting a coverup and claiming that the young girl had been coached by her mother, who raised false accusations against the defendant, her ex-boyfriend, after she found out he was cheating on her with another woman.
