FAIRFIELD — Jurors began deliberating the fate of a Suisun City man who shot and killed a friend as they were watching television and playing videos at his Stellar Way home on the night of Oct. 23, 2012.
Ryan J. Moore, 32, faces a murder charge. He has pleaded not guilty and did not take the witness stand during his two-week trial.
Moore had been drinking heavily before he picked up a rifle and pointed it at Bettina Brown, who was sitting on a nearby couch. A single shot was fired, killing Brown.
In his closing argument the prosecutor, Haroon Khan, repeated Moore’s statements he gave to police and a 911 operator shortly after the shooting that he had “just shot someone on accident” and “I killed her.” Khan rejected the defense claim that the shooting was accidental, saying Moore knew what he was doing and knew how dangerous a rifle can be.
Moore’s attorney suggested to jurors that a charge of involuntary manslaughter might be more appropriate than a murder charge, but she insisted Moore should be found not guilty of murder because the shooting was a drunken accident during a blackout.
Jurors are expected to resume their deliberations after the holiday weekend.
