Father accused of injuring child makes brief court appearance

FAIRFIELD — At his first court appearance Friday since his arrest earlier this week, a 42-year-old Fairfield father delayed entering a plea to a felony child abuse charge.

Kenneth D. Burroughs was arrested Tuesday as his 4-month-old son remained in the intensive care unit of an Oakland hospital, according to Deputy District Attorney Terry Ray. The infant has been hospitalized for the past three weeks after suffering injuries typically related to “shaken baby syndrome.”

The infant suffered serious bleeding in three different areas of his skull and an examination of his eyes discovered severe retinal bleeding.

Judge Peter B. Foor ordered Burroughs to remain jailed unless he can post a $120,000 bail.

Burroughs was ordered to return to court Tuesday when he will likely enter a plea and a date for a probable cause hearing may be set.
