Mare Island lands ship repair contract

Rep. Mike Thompson announced that the U.S. Coast Guard has a $5.1 million contract with Mare Island Dry Docks LLC to repair the Polar Star ice breaker.

“This is a great day for Mare Island, Vallejo and Solano County,” Thompson said in a press release. “The Polar Star contract will bring much-needed jobs and revenue to our community and it represents an important step forward in the economic revitalization of Mare Island.”

The Polar Star is a 1976 vessel that is 399 feet long and has a 140-person crew. It recently went to Antarctica and broke through 12 miles of ice up to 10 feet thick along a major shipping channel, the press release said.
