Famous Creations comes to downtown Fairfield

FAIRFIELD — Nicholas Gonzales-Rodriguez went from having a home baking and catering business to having one in a downtown Fairfield shop.

He recently moved Famous Creations to the storefront at 835 Texas St. People can go there to buy baked goods ranging from a cupcake to a wedding cake. They can have a quick snack or set up catering for a party.

Gonzales-Rodriguez started his business in his Fairfield house in March 2013. He got the word out on Facebook and built up a website with more than 6,500 “likes.”

“It’s all word of mouth,” Gonzales-Rodriguez said. “I know a lot of people here in Fairfield. That’s why I’m so successful. The word-of-mouth – it just lit up like fire.”

The business started taking over his house, from the garage to the living room to the kitchen. A friend told him he should get a store and helped get things moving. Within a matter of days, that led to leasing the downtown building.

The entry area to the store is pink and most of the inside is black, white and gray with pink accents. Photographs hanging from the walls include several of movie star Marilyn Monroe and several of elaborate cakes baked by Gonzales-Rodriguez.

He wanted to channel Hollywood fame and glamor with the decor, Gonzales-Rodriguez said. People are unique in Hollywood and he wants his creations to be unique, he said.

Among the cupcakes on the Famous Creations menu are Orange Cream Delight, Pink Champagne, Maple Bacon, Chocolate Caramel and Red Velvet. The catering menu includes teriyaki chicken, apple-spiced pork tenderloin, bacon-wrapped asparagus and Chinese chicken salad.

Leslie Romo had trouble finding a bakery to bake her a five-layer wedding cake that was square, rather than round, for a reasonable price. Then she came to Famous Creations. Gonzales-Rodriguez took on the task.

“Not only was it absolutely gorgeous, it tasted amazing,” Romo said.

Romo on a recent day worked behind the counter at Famous Creations.

Gonzales-Rodriguez’ enthusiasm for baking goes back to when he made his first strawberry cake as an 8-year-old. It turned out good, he said.

For Gonzales-Rodriguez, baking is more than a business. He feels good that something he does with his hands and his talent makes people feel good, he said.

Famous Creations is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/pages/Famous-Creations/178033182251738 or call 419-5733.
