Vacaville singer to perform at Super Bowl pre-parties
VACAVILLE — Courtney Roberts grew up singing in front of her bedroom mirror in her parents’ south Vacaville home. This weekend, she will be on her biggest stage yet: performing at two pre-Super Bowl parties.
“I’m really nervous,” said the 19-year-old, whose stage name is Courtney Page.
Roberts was packing at 5 p.m. Thursday for a red-eye flight from San Francisco International Airport. With a layoff in St. Paul, Minn., she expected to arrive in Indianapolis at 10:20 a.m. Friday.
It’s a big trip for Roberts. She has never been east of Arizona, could be rubbing elbows with celebrities and professional athletes and is opening for artists like J. Cole, who is nominated for the Grammy Award for best new artist. Unsure what to expect, she packed five pairs of heels.
As a child, Roberts preferred to stay in her room singing Madonna songs instead of playing sports.
“We thought she was a recluse,” her mom Karen Roberts said. “She was always in her room singing and dancing through the reflection of the TV.”
Roberts began singing at 4, started writing songs at 11 and learned guitar at 16. She has recorded three songs, two of which she plans to perform this weekend. Roberts owns the rights to her songs and writes her own lyrics. She does not like to attach a genre to her sound, instead she compares songs to other artists.
“She My Mouth For Me,” she says, is provocative and reminiscent of Katy Perry. “Mr. Right Now,” by contrast, is something she has pitched to the Disney Channel.
Roberts said she hopes the exposure from this weekend will elevate her career. She got the gigs through Squad Music Group, an artist development company. The trip is all expenses paid. Roberts will walk a red carpet before performing Friday at the Madden College Mixer.
She will open Saturday for J. Cole at the Tony and Anthony Dorsett Roundtable Super Bowl Special in a venue that seats 8,000. Each performance will be aired on TV.
“It can automatically start my following,” she said.
