GREEN VALLEY — George Qare didn’t panic when he saw the 1-year-old baby topple into the pool on Fourth of July two years ago.

The 13-year-old Green Valley youth and Boy Scout simply jumped in next to where the child went under water, pulled him back out, checked his airways for a possible obstruction and then gently patted him on the back to get any water out that the baby may have swallowed.

“He was crying, but he was fine,” said Qare, who will be honored Thursday night with a Certificate of Merit from the Mount Diablo Silverado Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Qare has been a Boy Scout for three years and has lived in Green Valley with his family since 2006.

He was at a family gathering around a local community pool two years ago when their neighbors arrived, including the 1-year-old. The mother of the child turned away for only a moment when the baby fell into the pool and Qare rescued him.

“I am proud of him,” said Sam Qare, George Qare’s father. “He did not panic and he jumped into the pool.”

His mother, Tanya Qare, called her son “phenomenal” and said when she was told he was being honored by the Mount Diablo Silverado Council, “I think I was flying higher than he was.”

George Qare is still working on his swimming and first aid badges and has the long-term dream of making it to Eagle Scout.

“Just would like to thank the Boy Scouts for all their efforts and the training and the life skills that they have given him,” Sam Qare said.

  1. Kudos to this young man for being aware when the parents weren’t! We all know what the outcome would have been had this child not been there to do the parents’ job! He’s phenomenal, the parent’s of the baby need to tale some parenting lessons! Lesson one-NEVER LOOK AWAY WHEN YOUR CHILD IS NEAR AN OPEN BODY OF WATER!

  2. Great job George! You are truly a home town hero!! You are well on your way to earning your Eagle Scout designation and then who knows what great things you will accomplish!
