TV highlights: Catching up with Meaghan Rath of ‘Being Human’

After two seasons of playing a wandering ghost on “Being Human,” actress Meaghan Rath thinks she’s found her sweet spot.

“For a lot of the time, she is conflicted,” Rath says of Sally, who was murdered by her boyfriend only to be condemned to the apartment where it happened and usually can be seen by a few people.

Now, in the new season (premiering 9 p.m. Monday, Syfy), that’s all changed. Returning from a state of limbo where she was left last season, Sally has a second chance. People can see her. She goes out on a date. Life is opening up for her.

“This is part of her growing up. Never in her lifetime has she . . . been able to be this way,” Rath says. However, “I don’t know if she can be (happy). It’s almost the whole point of the show.”

Sally’s new opportunity will change her – and bring dire consequences. “She’ll be very selfish in how she sees things,” Rath says.

The female fan base of “Being Human” has connected with Sally from almost the beginning, Rath says.

“So many of them can identify with being in bad or even abusive relationships,” Rath says. “They see Sally as a (role model).”

Playing Sally is Rath’s biggest career break so far. She grew up in Montreal and always made up stories to entertain herself. She enrolled in an acting workshop, where she was cast in an independent film. An audition led her to being cast in “Being Human.”

Single with no children, Rath sees her life now as a time to explore new possibilities, especially on one of Syfy’s biggest hits.

“I don’t think there could be a better time than right now,” she says.

Other highlights for the week of Jan. 13-19 (check local listings):

Sunday

– “Golden Globes” (8 p.m., NBC). This 70th annual awards celebration courtesy of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honors outstanding achievements in movies and on TV. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hosts of the live show.

– “Shameless” (9 p.m., Showtime). A third season begins with adjustments for all: Fiona living with Jimmy; Lip to community service; and Jody and Sheila over the baby’s restlessness.

Monday

– “The Carrie Diaries” (8 p.m. CW). The adventures of a teenage Carrie Bradshaw in her pre-”Sex and the City” days are the basis for this comedy-drama with an ’80s theme.

Tuesday

– “Pioneers of Television” (8 p.m., PBS). Funny females are profiled, including Joan Rivers, Mary Tyler Moore and Betty White.

– “Go On” (9 p.m., NBC). OK, ladies. Would you rather date actor Matthew Perry, or skateboarder Shaun White?

Wednesday

– “American Idol” (8 p.m., Fox). Another season launches with a (mostly) new panel of judges: Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, Nicki Manij with old standby Randy Jackson. Put up your dukes, women!

– “Workaholics” (10 p.m., Comedy Central). Anders and Blake perform an exorcism at the office in the season opener.

Thursday

– “30 Rock” (8 p.m., NBC). While Liz and Jack are away, Tracy and Jenna are in charge, much to Kenneth’s chagrin.
