Ex-ABC News veteran Sam Donaldson charged with DUI

LEWES, Del. — ABC News veteran and former correspondent Sam Donaldson is facing a drunken driving charge in Delaware.

Police in the southern coastal town of Lewes say the 78-year-old Donaldson was stopped Dec. 1 for a traffic violation. Police say the officer determined Donaldson had been drinking and gave him field sobriety tests.

Donaldson was arrested and later released. An arraignment is set for Friday.

A phone call to Donaldson’s home in McLean, Va., on Wednesday was not immediately returned. McLean is about 110 miles west of Lewes.

Donaldson was twice chief White House correspondent for ABC News, covering Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. He also co-hosted “PrimeTime Live” with Diane Sawyer and the ABC News Sunday morning broadcast “This Week with Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts.”

Second only to that nasty Helen Thomas, Sam Donaldson was the most obnoxious White House reporter that ever hatched out of MSM central. He was particulary rude to people like Marlin Fitzwater. I remember all his cat calling, insults and ridiculous questions during his tenure as an ABC White House Reporter. ''Making friends and influencing people again, Mr. Secretary?'' Donaldson would shriek after the press secretary would make a short statement in the middle of the night with no questions to be taken until the situation was clarified in the morning. Not good enough for Donaldson who would start bellowing insults needlessly.
