VALLEJO — The Commanders Jazz Ensemble, part of the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West from Travis AFB, will swing into Vallejo for a free concert, 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Empress Theatre, 330 Virginia St.
Joining the ensemble is Vacaville’s The Honeybee Trio, who sing classics from the 1930s and beyond.
Under the direction of Senior Master Sgt. Rick Thorp, The Commanders carries on the American musical tradition of traveling big bands. This group of airmen-musicians plays everything from traditional jazz, bop and swing to Broadway favorites, popular tunes, Latin rhythms and patriotic music.
Touring the western states, the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West has performed for thousands of listeners in live concert appearances and for millions worldwide via recordings and television and radio broadcasts. It is the only active-duty Air Force band west of the Rockies.
In the four years since The Honeybees began, they have performed hundreds of times to audiences throughout California. They have formed a close association with Travis Air Force Base, where they have appeared several times.
