Hayward woman dies in I-680 crash

By December 31, 2010

FAIRFIELD — An solo vehicle accident on northbound Interstate 680 south of Marshview Road at 12:30 p.m. Thursday claimed the life of a passenger.

Richard Sanchez, 68, of Hayward, was driving his Ford Explorer at about 70 mph. Witnesses said he tried to change lanes and lost control. The Ford went into the gravel median. Sanchez tried to avoid hitting the metal guard rail and the vehicle overturned several times as it crossed back into the lanes, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

It landed on its wheel on the right shoulder of freeway between the freeway and Goodyear Road, which is a frontage road. A passenger in the front seat, a 66-year-old woman, was pronounced dead on the scene by Medic Ambulance officials, according to the press release. The CHP did not reveal the name of the woman, but said all people involved were Hayward residents.

Another passenger, Manuel Sanchez, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered what the CHP called major injuries. Richard Sanchez and another passenger, Guisanphe Sanchez, suffered minor injuries and were taken to John Muir Hospital in Contra Costa County.

At 2:24 p.m., the roadway was clear of the accident and the CHP canceled a SIG alert that had been in effect for almost two hours.

The CHP doesn’t consider alcohol or drugs as being a factor and as of Thursday afternoon was still investigating the incident, according to the press release.
